Codeup or SMU Trilogy?
Thinking about attending a coding bootcamp? Find the best fit for your goals
Who am I working with?
Codeup was founded in San Antonio in 2013 by 3 co-founders to help people change careers. Today, those 3 co-founders remain our only owners. We are built in Texas and carry no debt or venture capital investment. Moreover, we’re approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs to accept the GI Bill (which is NOT a simple process to work through).
SMU’s coding bootcamp is actually run by a large education company called Trilogy, which in turn is owned by a company called 2U. You might think you’re buying the SMU brand, but your education is actually the last leg of a baton race of investment. Because they work under the umbrella of a university, this bootcamp is not required to publish outcomes, approve instructors, or abide by any of the regulations set up by the Texas Workforce Commission for career schools.
Codeup will help you land a job or give you back 100% of your tuition. We put our money on the line with our promise to launch your career. Our grads leverage a 99% employment rate, an average time of 2.1 weeks to hire, and partners like Oracle, USAA, Cognizant, and Accenture. All of that is backed up by the fact that we publish our outcomes through the Texas Workforce Commission and Council for Integrity in Results and Reporting.
SMU does not publish outcomes, so there is no available data on employment rate, time to hire, starting salary, job titles, or anything else.
Programming is like a trade – practice is the most important thing. You learn through an instructor-led, hands on curriculum of over 670 hours. SMU’s coding bootcamp is only 210 hours spread part time over 12 weeks. Even though their program is 69% shorter, they also teach a curriculum that covers more languages and technologies than we do.
At Codeup, we teach an enterprise stack to suit the hiring needs of partners like Oracle, USAA, and Cognizant. The most important skills are tools-agnostic, meaning they don’t depend on a specific technology – things like how to think like a developer, how to de-bug code, and how to teach yourself coding languages. Learn how to learn at Codeup, and you can teach yourself anything.

Codeup partners with 8 financial aid providers, including 4 grant partners, 3 loan partners, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. We also offer nearly $200k in scholarships annually. SMU doesn’t offer any tuition funding partnerships. When it comes to investing in your tuition, we’ve got your bases covered.
If you’re just looking for a new skill, you can click that back button. If you want a career in software development, Codeup is right for you. As an immersive 22 week career accelerator, our focus on employment outcomes ensures that the return on your investment is worth it.
